Interview Tips

  • Remember you are a guest in the office of the interviewer.  Do not move items on his desk or move the chair closer to his desk, unless you are asked to do so.
  • Never arrive late for an interview.  Employers have scheduled time to interview you.  This interview time begins at the time you agreed to for the interview.  So, arrive about fifteen minutes early so you can complete the application for employment by the time you agreed to interview.  Make sure you have detailed directions for the place you will interview, and allow ample time for traffic conditions.
  • Complete the application for employment completely.  We do not like to complete an application and its details, especially if you have completed several recently.  Yet, resist the temptation to write see resume on the application.  Employers typically want the details on their application.  If not, they would have just asked for a resume.  Do not leave any items blank on the application.  Use N/A if a part of the application does not apply.  Open or negotiable fits well with salary expectations for the position you seek.
  • Show professional courtesy and respect to the interviewer.  Calling the interviewer by his first name, in an attempt to friendly, can prompt a negative impression.  Typically the applicant should remain friendly, but realize the interview should remain on a professional and business level.
  • Receptionists can have an impact on the person selected for a position.  Interviewers often get input from others who saw or met the candidate.  The applicant may show characteristics that the interviewer would not see.  So, remain aware what you say, and how you say it, may find its way to the interviewer.
  • Dress professionally for an interview.  Regardless of how you may dress for your present job, or the dress code of the company where you seek a job, dress up for the interview.  Men should wear a suit, ladies a suit or appropriate dress.  In recent years Business Casual Friday has changed the way many want to dress at work, and for interviews.  Yet, never dress casually for a job interview.
  • Answer the questions of the interviewer making direct eye contact.  Do not provide additional information that could make a negative impact on possibilities to get the job.
  • Sit in the chair with your feet on the floor and make eye contact with your interviewer.
