Impress Your Manager

  1. Begin working before your scheduled time. That means you need to arrive a few minutes before your scheduled time to start work. Have you coffee ready and begin working. Let your boss catch you showing responsibility.
  2. Stay away from the people at work with a reputation of negativity toward the company and its policies. Managers see people who group together as similar in their thoughts and actions. The old saying "Birds of a feather flock together"has relevance at work.
  3. Show appreciation. If you get a raise, promotion, or a bonus tell your manager you appreciate it. In fact, it is a good idea to thank your manager for the opportunity to work at the company. It must come across sincere. Few people acknowledge pay changes or promotions. Saying thanks is a good idea and shows appreciation. At Christmas you might get your manager an appropriate gift.
  4. Meet and exceed deadlines and expectations. If your job has expectations or deadlines do all you can to meet them. If you see you cannot make a deadline, advise your manager in advance and see if you can work extra time to meet the deadline.
  5. Ask your manager for advise to improve your performance. Occasionally you may take the opportunity to ask your manager how you are doing in your job. Ask for suggestions on how to perform your job better. Write these down as he gives you details. Take them seriously, even if you disagree with them. Remember it is not your company.
  6. If you make a mistake tell your manager as soon as possible. Taking responsibility for your actions shows maturity and responsibility. Your manager can help deal with the problem now. If you try to hide it, the problem probably will grow. When your manager discovers the problem you will lose credibility and the problem may cause you to lose your job.
  7. Do not exceed your authority. Employers like employees to show initiative, but never exceed your boundaries. If you go beyond your limits you may have entered another persons area. Maybe your manager sees you as trying to take over his duties. You might upset a coworker by entering his/her work area. As a result, you may have done something wrong that could cost the company money. At the least, it has impacted your image.
  8. Show your manager you understand the purpose of your company. Companies may sell cars and seek to provide their customers with a good car and customer service. Yet, they seek to make money. Companies need employees who help them achieve their goals. In return employees have job stability, pay increases, and growth opportunities. Find ways you can help your company save money and make more money. Suggest these to your manager after you have carefully thought through the ideas.
  9. Show a positive attitude and smile. People do not like to be around persons who are negative. Employers do not either. Companies need employees who stay positive in spite of negative news and lots of work. Persons who remain positive about their company and job provide a foundation to help the company a success.
